Test Methods and Explanation

Notched Izod Impact Strength
The notched izod impact strength is the resistance of a material to breaking from a swinging impact force, and uses a rectangular bar test specimen with a V-notch in the centre, supported at one end, that is struck with an impact at the unsupported end.

Tensile Strength
The tensile strength is the resistance of a material to breaking from a pulling force and uses a dumbbell shaped test specimen, gripped at either end, that is pulled apart at a constant speed.

Flexural Strength
The flexural strength is the resistance of a material to breaking from a bending force and uses a rectangular bar test specimen, supported at either end, that is flexed downwards in the centre by a deflector.

Falling Dart Impact Strength
The dart impact strength is the resistance of a material to breaking from a drop impact force and uses a 50mm flat, square test specimen, clamped over a circular opening, that is struck on the top-face by a falling striker.

Vicat Softening Temperature
The Vicat Softening Temperature is the resistance of a material to indentation as it begins to soften at elevated temperature and uses a 10mm flat, square test specimen, fully supported underneath, with a load applied to the top surface using a 1mm diameter rod.

Heat Deflection Temperature
The Heat Deflection Temperature is the resistance of a material to a bending force at elevated temperature and uses a rectangular bar test specimen supported at either end with a load applied in the centre using a deflector.

Flammability Resistance
The Flammability Resistance of a material is the resistance of a material to flame ignition and propagation and uses a rectangular bar test specimen, supported either horizontally or vertically, above an open flame.
