Athlone Extrusions Website - ASA
ASA
Health & Safety Sheet – ASA
(Issue A. 12-03)
Section 1: Identification of the substance and the company
1.1 Substance: Acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer (ASA)
1.2 Company: Athlone Extrusions LTD
  Address: Grace Road
Athlone, Co. Westmeath
Ireland
  Telephone: +353 9064 92679

Section 2: Composition/information on ingredients
2.1 Composition:Acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer
This product consists of high molecular weight polymers which are not expected to
be hazardous.

Section 3: Hazard identification
3.1 Potential health effects:
Eyes: Product may cause irritation or injury due to mechanical action.
Skin: No adverse effects anticipated by this route of exposure incidental to proper
industrial handling.
  Ingestion: Not acutely toxic.
  Inhalation: Inhalation of product unlikely.
3.2 Melt processing health effects:Molten plastic can cause severe burns.
Processing fumes may cause irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and
in cases of severe over-exposure, nausea and headache.
Grease like processing fume condensates on ventilation duct work, moulds and
other surfaces can cause irritation and injury to skin.
3.3 Medical restrictions: Inhalation of product unlikely.

Section 4: First aid measures
4.1 On contact with eyes: Remove contact lenses. Flush eyes well with copious quantities of water or
normal saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention, if irritation persists.
4.2 On skin contact: Flush skin thoroughly with water. For molten plastic, reference 4.6 below.
4.3 On ingestion: Since this product is not expected to be an ingestion problem, no first aid
procedures are required.
4.4 Inhalation: Not likely to be inhaled due to physical form.
4.5 Melt processing:In case of skin contact with molten plastic, cool rapidly with water. Seek medical
attention. Do not attempt removal of plastics without medical assistance. Do not
use solvent for removal.
In case of irritation from inhalation of processing fumes, leave contaminated area
and breathe fresh air. If coughing, difficult breathing of any other symptoms
develop, seek medical attention, even if the symptoms develop at a later time.
In case of skin contact with fume condensate, wash thoroughly with soap and
water. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.

Section 5: Fire fighting measures
5.1 Fire fighting:Approved pressure demand breathing apparatus and protective clothing should be
used for all fires. Water spray is the preferred extinguishing medium. This product
will melt but will not be carried on the surface of water.
5.2 Extinguishing Media: Water spray and foam. Water is the best extinguishing medium. Carbon dioxide
and dry chemical are not generally recommended because their lack of cooling
capacity may permit re-ignition.
5.3 Hazardous combustion products: Hazardous combustion products may include intense heat, dense black smoke,
carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, traces of hydrogen cyanide and hydrocarbon
fragments.
5.4 Conditions of flammability: Requires a continuous flame source to ignite.
5.5 Explosion data:
Impact sensitivity: Not sensitive to mechanical impact.
Static discharge: Not sensitive to static discharge.

Section 6: Accidental release measures
6.1 Sweep or gather up material and place in proper container for disposal or
recovery.

Section 7: Handling and storage
7.1 Handling: Follow good industrial hygiene practices. Apply adequate ventilation directly to the
outside air. Do not inhale headspace air from boxes. Avoid the formation of dust.
When handling materials containing metal pigments, gloves are recommended.
7.2 Storage: Inert material under normal storage conditions. No special precautions required.
Keep dry for optimum processing. To avoid risk of collapse if accidentally exposed
to water, do not stack unsupported boxes too high

Section 8: Exposure controls/personal protection
8.1 Engineering controls: A continuous supply of fresh air to the workplace together with removal of
processing fumes through exhaust systems is recommended. Processing fume
condensates may be a fire hazard and they may be hazardous; remove
periodically from exhaust hoods, duct work and other surfaces using appropriate
personal protection.
8.2 Personal protective equipment:
Eye/face: Wear safety glasses with side shields or chemical goggles. In
addition, use full face shield when cleaning processing fume condensates from
hoods, ducts and other surfaces.
Skin: When handling, avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. When
melt processing product, wear long pants, long sleeves, well insulated gloves and
face shield when applicable.
Respiratory: Good industrial hygiene practice requires adequate general
ventilation of the workplace. When dust and powder either from handling or from
secondary operations, such as grinding, sanding or sawing are not adequately
controlled, use respirator approved for protection from dust. When processing
fumes are not adequately controlled, use respirator approved for protection from
organic vapours and acid gases.

Section 9: Physical and chemical properties
