Athlone Extrusions Website - High Impact ABS - B300
High Impact ABS - B300
Health & Safety Sheet – ABS
(Issue A. 12-03)
Section 1: Identification of the substance and the company
1.1 Substance: ABS
1.2 Company: Athlone Extrusions LTD
  Address: Grace Road
Athlone, Co. Westmeath
Ireland
  Telephone: +353 9064 92679

Section 2: Composition/information on ingredients
2.1 Composition: Modified Acrylonitrile – Butadiene – Styrene Copolymer

Section 3: Hazard identification
3.1 This product is not hazardous according to EC criteria.

Section 4: First aid measures
4.1 Iinhalation:No adverse effects anticipated by this route of exposure incidental to proper
industrial handling.
4.2 On skin contact: Wash off in flowing water or shower.
4.3 On contact with eyes:Gently rinse the affected eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Have the
affected person remove contact lenses if he/she is wearing them and continue
rinsing. Do not let the person rub their eyes.
Arrange for examination and treatment by a physician as soon as possible.
4.4 On ingestion:No adverse effects anticipated by this route of exposure incidental to proper
industrial handling.

Section 5: Fire fighting measures
5.1 Extinguishing media: Water, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, synthetic foams.
5.2 Protection of firefighters:Wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and protective fire
fighting clothing (includes fire fighting helmet, coat, trousers, boots and gloves).
5.3 Hazardous combustion products: Dense smoke is emitted when burned without sufficient oxygen. The smoke may
contain combustion products of varying composition in addition to carbon dioxide
and carbon monoxide.
5.4 Specific methods of firefighting: Soak thoroughly with water to cool and prevent re-ignition.
In addition small quantities of the following substances can be formed: Carbon monoxide, monomers, other degradation products.
5.5 Further information: Dispose of fire debris and contaminated extinguishing water in accordance with local regulations.

Section 6: Accidental release measures
6.1 Measures when handling spillages: Sweep up, recover if possible, or dispose of according to applicable regulations.

Section 7: Handling and storage
7.1 Handling: Good general ventilation should be sufficient for most conditions. Avoid breathing
dust.
7.2 Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Storage silos must be grounded to prevent static charge.
Proper ventilation is recommended to control dust formation.
Remove all possible ignition sources in areas where dust clouds can be formed.

Section 8: Exposure controls/personal protection
8.1 Engineering controls: Good general ventilation should be sufficient for most processing operations.
Local exhaust ventilation should be provided for operations at high temperatures to
control the possible exposure to fumes at the die.
8.2 Personal protective equipment:
Respiratory protection: In dusty atmospheres, use an approved dust respirator.
Eye protection: Wear protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles.
Hand, skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing, wear suitable gloves.

Section 9: Physical and chemical properties
9.1 Form: sheet
9.2 Odour: None
9.3 Melting point / range: 90-130ºC
9.4 Decomposition temp: >270ºC
9.5 Vapour pressure: Not applicable
9.6 Specific gravity: 1.05 – 1.07 @ 25ºC
9.7 Flash point: >355ºC
9.8 Auto-ignition temp: >370ºC
9.9 Flammability: Not applicable

Section 10: Stability and reactivity
10.1 Chemical stability: Stable under normal handling and storage conditions
10.2 Conditions to avoid:Avoid excessive heat.
See decomposition temperature, section 9.
Processed at high temperatures, the material may generate vapour levels
sufficient to cause eye and respiratory irritation.
10.3 Hazardous decomposition products:Fumes released during processing may include hydrocarbons (e.g. styrene,
ethylbenzene) and traces of acrylonitrile.

Section 11: Toxicological information
11.1 Ingestion:Single dose oral toxicity is believed to be low.
Considered to be physiologically inert.
May cause choking if swallowed.
11.2 Eye contact: Solid or dust may cause irritation or corneal injury due to mechanical action.
11.3 Skin contact: Essentially non-irritating to skin.
Mechanical injury only.
Skin absorption is unlikely due to physical properties.
11.4 Inhalation:At room temperature, exposure to vapours is unlikely due to physical properties;
higher temperatures may generate vapour levels sufficient to cause irritation and
other effects. Dust may cause irritation to upper respiratory tract.

Section 12: Ecological information
12.1 In the aquatic environment, exposure to vapours is unlikely due to physical
properties; higher temperatures may generate vapour levels sufficient to cause
irritation and other effects.
Dust may cause irritation to upper respiratory tract.

Section 13: Disposal considerations
13.1 Not classified as hazardous under transport regulations.
13.2 Clean uncontaminated product may be disposed of by sale to reprocessors.
Scrap materials may be disposed of at approved landfills or preferably by
incineration under approved conditions.

Section 14: Transport information
14.1 Product is not classified for any mode of transportation.

Section 15: Regulatory information
15.1 Product does not require classification according to the criteria of the EC.

Section 16: Other information
The information contained herein is based on the present state of our knowledge and does not
therefore guarantee certain properties.
