Ignition Resistant High Impact Polystyrene - P90IR Print
Health & Safety Sheet – Ignition Resistant Polystyrene
(Issue A. 12-03)
Section 1: Identification of the substance and the company
1.1 Substance: Ignition Resistant Polystyrene
1.2 Company: Athlone Extrusions LTD
  Address: Grace Road
Athlone, Co. Westmeath
  Telephone: +353 9064 92679

Section 2: Composition/information on ingredients
Styrene-butadiene copolymer (CAS# 009003-55-8) Proprietary brominated flame retardant
2.1 Antimony trioxide <5% carc.C.3; R40 CAS: 001309-64-4 EC No.215-175-0
  Proprietary flame retardant

Section 3: Hazard identification
3.1 This product is not hazardous according to EC criteria.

Section 4: First aid measures
  Never give fluids
4.1 If inhaled: Move person to fresh air; if effects occur, consult a physician.
4.2 On skin contact: Wash Skin with plenty of water.
4.3 On contact with eyes: Irrigate immediately with water for at least 5 minutes. Mechanical irritation only.
4.4 On ingestion: No emergency medical treatment necessary.

Section 5: Fire fighting measures
5.1 Suitable extinguishing media: Water fog or fine spray. Carbon dioxide. Dry chemical fire extinguishers. Synthetic foams.
5.2 Protection of Firefighters: Wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and protective fire fighting clothing (includes fire fighting helmet, coat, trousers, boots and gloves).
5.3 Hazardous Combustion Products: Dense smoke is emitted when burned without sufficient oxygen. The smoke may contain combustion products of varying composition in addition to carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Under conditions of incomplete combustion or pyrolysis, various phenolic and/or brominated compounds, such as hydrogen bromide, may be evolved.
5.4 Specific methods of Firefighting: Soak thoroughly with water to cool and prevent reignition.

Section 6: Accidental release measures
6.1 Sweep up, recover if possible, or dispose of according to applicable regulations.

Section 7: Handling and storage
7.1 Handling: Good general ventilation should be sufficient for most conditions. Avoid breathing dust.
7.2 Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Storage silos must be grounded to prevent static charge. Proper ventilation is recommended to control dust formation.

Section 8: Exposure controls/personal protection
8.1 Engineering Controls: Good general ventilation should be sufficient for most processing operations.
Local exhaust ventilation should be provided for operations at high temperatures to control the possible exposure to fumes at the die.
8.2 Personal protective equipment:
Respiratory protection: In dusty or misty atmospheres, use an approved particulate respirator.
Skin protection: No precautions other than clean body-covered clothing should be needed.
  Eye/face protection: Use safety glasses.

Section 9: Physical and chemical properties
9.1 Form: Granules
9.2 Colour: Coloured
9.3 Odour: None
9.4 Melting point/range: 60-100 deg. C
9.5 Decomposition temperature: >210 deg. C
9.6 Auto-ignition temperature: Not applicable
9.7 Water solubility: Insoluble
9.8 Vapour pressure: Not applicable
9.9 Specific gravity: 1.12-1.17
9.10 Flash point: Not applicable
9.11 Flammability-LFL: Not applicable
9.12 Flammability-UFL: Not applicable

Section 10: Stability and reactivity
10.1 Chemical Stability: Stable under normal handling and storage conditions, see Section 7, Handling and Storage.
10.2 Conditions to avoid: Excessive heat. See decomposition temperature, Section 9. Processed at high temperatures, the material may generate vapour levels sufficient to cause eye and respiratory irritation.
10.3  Materials to avoid: Oxidising agents. Some finely ground metallic fibres/flakes (especially aluminium) have been found to react with this system.
10.4  Hazardous decomposition products: Fumes released during processing may include traces of Hydrocarbons. Thermal decomposition products may include traces of Hydrocarbons. Styrene. Hydrogen bromide.

Section 11: Toxicological information
11.1 Ingestion: Single dose oral toxicity is believed to be low. Considered to be physiologically inert. May cause choking if swallowed.
11.2  Eye Contact: Solid or dust may cause irritation or corneal injury due to mechanical action.
11.3  Skin Contact: Mechanical injury only. Skin absorption is unlikely due to physical properties.
11.4  Inhalation: At room temperature, exposure to vapours is unlikely due to physical properties; higher temperatures may generate vapour levels sufficient to cause irritation to upper respiratory tract (nose and throat).
11.5  Other Information:
Pigments and dyes and/or flame retardants are encapsulated in the resin and are not expected to cause any hazardous condition when processed according to good manufacturing procedures.
Although this product contains an additive which is classified as dangerous according to EC criteria on the basis of toxicological properties, this preparation is not expected to present a danger to human health as the additive is not fully encapsulated in the polymer.

Section 12: Ecological information
12.1 In the aquatic environment, this product should not present problems because of extremely low solubility.
In the soil compartment, material is inherently very difficult to degrade.

Section 13: Disposal considerations
13.1 Conversion or process waste can be recycled (see Section 16, Other Information).
Clean uncontaminated product may be disposed of at approved landfills or preferably by incineration under approved conditions.
If incinerated, it is recommended that the flue gases be treated by a scrubber before exhausting to the atmosphere.

Section 14: Transport information
14.1 Product is not classified for any mode of transportation.

Section 15: Regulatory information
15.1 EC Classification and User Label Information: This product does not require labelling according to the criteria of the commission of the European Communities.

Section 16: Other information
The information contained herein is based on the present state of our knowledge and does not therefore guarantee certain properties.
Recipients of our product must take responsibility for observing existing laws and regulations.
